History and Heritage
Founded in antiquity and known as Xelb under Islamic rule, Silves was a thriving center of trade and culture between the 9th and 12th centuries, nicknamed the "Baghdad of the West". In 1189, King Sancho I conquered it with the help of crusaders, and it was definitively integrated into the kingdom in 1249. The castle, classified as a national monument, is the largest in the Algarve and one of the best examples of Islamic military architecture. Next to it stands the Silves Cathedral, built on the site of a former mosque and considered the most important Gothic building in the region.

Known as the "orange capital," Silves has an economy based on agriculture (citrus farming, cork production, and vineyards) and heritage tourism. The city annually celebrates the Medieval Fair, a historical reenactment that animates the streets with period costumes, Arabic gastronomy, and street performances. The Silves Municipal Archaeological Museum exhibits finds from the Paleolithic to the Islamic period.
